What do I need to know about UK tyre law?

  • The legal limit for minimum depth of tread on your tyres is 1.6mm, across the central ¾ of the tread around the complete circumference of the tyre. It is recommended that you replace your tyre before the legal limit is reached for safety reasons and in some cases manufacturers recommend replacing at 3mm.
  • If you fail to regularly check your tyres, watch out, it could cost you three penalty points and £2,500 in fines.
  • It is also a legal requirement that tyres of different construction types (main types being radial and cross-ply) are not fitted to opposite sides of the same axle.
  • Mixing brands and patterns of the same construction type is ok depending on the vehicle type but it is always best to check the manufacturer’s recommendation.

Wheel balancing

  • One of the first signs of your wheels being out of balance is when your steering wheel begins to wobble at certain speeds.
  • A steering wheel ‘wobble’ may not always be present due to the weight of the vehicle so it is always important to have your wheels balanced when new tyres are fitted.
  • Wheel balancing equals smoother ride, better tyre wear and ultimately money saved.
